Location privacy

ObserverWX requests device location only after you choose a device-location action on the first-run setup or in Location Hub. Shared, saved, recent, and page-specific locations stay in this browser. Coordinates are sent to ObserverWX only to resolve and load the weather products you request. Follow mode runs only while this page is open and you explicitly leave it enabled.

ObserverWX Decision Support

Notifications and alert types

Closed-app alerts

Monitor up to five explicitly saved places with alert types and optional local storm-impact notifications chosen separately for each place.

No monitored places saved for push delivery.
Checking closed-app alert availability...
Controlled notification testing

Tests are sent only to this authenticated installation, are clearly labeled OBSERVERWX TEST, never enter the live NWWS/NWS alert stream, and automatically verify that an identical second attempt is suppressed.

Choose a scenario after closed-app alerts are active.
Delivery activity and device health
No delivery activity is available for this device.

Foreground sound, speech, and vibration require ObserverWX to be open. Closed-app alerts monitor only the places listed above; Follow My Location remains foreground-only and does not continuously transmit or track the device in the background. Local storm-impact notifications can report an approaching estimate, impact possible now, polygon entry, configured lead-time thresholds, or a materially shifted estimate for supported warnings. These are approximate and never mean it is safe to wait. Warning audio plays once for a newly encountered official issuance, not on every scan.

ObserverWX arrival estimates are calculated from official NWS warning motion information and are approximate. Storms can accelerate, slow, change direction, weaken, intensify, or redevelop. Follow official instructions immediately. ObserverWX does not replace Wireless Emergency Alerts, NOAA Weather Radio, local emergency management, or official NWS instructions.

Maya Local Guide / Weather Dictionary

Maya matches your words against help topics and weather terms stored inside ObserverWX. Questions are not sent to an AI service, and Maya cannot make emergency or operational decisions.

Built-in guideType a weather term, acronym, or task and Maya will match it to local ObserverWX help.

1. Choose A Place

Use Location Hub once for city/state, ZIP, address, airport, coordinates, or device location. Following pages and other open ObserverWX tabs update from that shared place; failed lookups retain the current place.

2. Read Current Weather

Current Conditions gives the plain-language picture. METARs give the official coded observation.

3. Review Alerts

Red or amber items deserve a closer look.

4. Add Context

Use Forecast, Radar/Satellite, Hazards, Tropical Weather, NOAA Radio, Flight Tracker, Live Cameras, SPC, GFA, Lightning, Space Weather, Climate, Fire Weather, and PIREPs when weather is changing.

Grouped Navigation

Dashboard stays one tap away. Open a category to choose a page; the active category is highlighted. On phones, use Menu. Dashboard > Dashboard Settings > Tabs / Accessibility lets you hide pages, reorder categories, and pin favorites.

Install ObserverWX

Use your browser's Install App or Add to Home Screen command. Installed mode still needs an internet connection for live weather.

Freshness First

Check timestamps and source status. If data look old or unavailable, open the linked official source before making a weather decision.

Privacy & Location

Typed places do not require GPS permission. Device location is optional and requested only after you choose it. Shared, saved, recent, and page-specific places stay in that browser/device.

Public Beta

Some sources may change or refuse embedding. Report broken data, confusing text, or layout problems to support@observerwx.com.

METAR / SPECI / COR

Hover terms to learn shorthand without opening a manual.

Flight Category

VFR, MVFR, IFR, and LIFR are based on ceiling and visibility. The app shows the category near each current report.

TAF / AFD / SPC

TAF gives terminal forecast timing. AFD explains forecaster reasoning. SPC gives convective outlooks, watches, MDs, and storm reports.

QC Records

The QC tab can build checklist rows, daily summaries, copy tables for Excel, and save day records locally. Choose Entire sheet in a table's Copy menu to include its headers, all displayed rows, and every column, then paste into cell A1 of a blank Excel sheet.

Weather Calculators

Observation, aviation, and unit-conversion tools. Calculations run locally in this browser.

Temperature & Moisture

Temperature conversions, humidity, wet-bulb approximation, and apparent-temperature indices.

Temperature, Dew Point, RH & Wet Bulb

Calculate relative humidity and an approximate wet-bulb temperature from air temperature and dew point.

Enter temperature and dew point.

RH uses the revised Magnus relationship. Wet bulb uses the Stull approximation, intended for roughly -20 to 50 C and 5 to 99% RH.

Heat Index & Wind Chill

Evaluate hot- and cold-weather apparent temperature using standard NWS equations.

Enter temperature, humidity, and wind.

Heat index is applicable in warm, humid conditions; wind chill is applicable at 50 F or colder with wind above 3 MPH.

Temperature Conversion

Convert between Fahrenheit and Celsius without changing the entered value.

Enter a temperature.

Clouds & Aviation

Operational planning estimates and exact visibility-unit conversions.

Estimated Cloud Base

Estimate lifting condensation level height from temperature/dew-point spread and field elevation.

Enter temperature, dew point, and elevation.

Operational approximation: about 400 ft per 1 C spread (222 ft per 1 F). This is not an observed ceiling and must not replace official observations.

Pressure & Density Altitude

Estimate pressure altitude and density altitude for aviation planning.

Enter elevation, altimeter, and outside-air temperature.

Uses the standard operational approximations PA = elevation + (29.92 - altimeter) x 1,000 and DA = PA + 120 x (OAT - ISA temperature).

Visibility Conversion

Convert visibility among statute miles, nautical miles, kilometers, and meters.

Enter a visibility value.

Wind

Exact speed conversions and runway-relative wind components.

Wind Speed Conversion

Convert knots, miles per hour, kilometers per hour, and meters per second.

Enter a wind speed.

Headwind & Crosswind Components

Resolve a wind into headwind/tailwind and left/right crosswind relative to a runway heading.

Enter wind direction, runway heading, and speed.

Uses trigonometric components from wind direction relative to runway magnetic heading. Confirm the wind and runway references use the same true/magnetic convention.

Pressure

Exact conversion between common altimeter and pressure units.

Pressure Conversion

Convert inches of mercury to hectopascals/millibars and back.

Enter a pressure value.

Precipitation & Snow

Exact liquid-depth conversion. No assumed snow ratio is applied.

Precipitation Depth Conversion

Convert measured liquid precipitation or liquid-equivalent depth between inches and millimeters.

Enter a precipitation depth.

One inch equals exactly 25.4 millimeters. Snow-to-liquid ratio is intentionally not estimated because it varies substantially by event.
